90th Anniversary of the first successful Around the World Flight by the Douglas World Cruisers
Monday, March 17, 2014 will mark the 90th anniversary of the departure of the Douglas World Cruisers from the Santa Monica Airport, then called Clover Field, en route to begin the attempt to be the first aircraft to circumnavigate the globe. [hr]
When: March 16, 2014 at 2:00pm-4:00pm Where: The Museum of Flying (3100 Airport Avenue, Santa Monica, California 90405) Cost: Museum admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors/students, $6 for children aged 6 to 12, children aged 5 and under are free. [hr] On Sunday March 16th, 2014 at 2:00 pm, the Museum of Flying will provide a special presentation to commemorate this event.
The program will consist of an oral history presentation by noted aviation artist, author, and historian Mike Machat on the around the world flight of the Douglas World Cruisers. In addition, Mr. Machat will also provide a history presentation of the Douglas Aircraft Company called “Douglas by the Decades”. Following that presentation, the Museum will screen a 75-minute documentary on the World Cruisers journey that was produced in 2005.
The Museum is currently open Friday through Sunday from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm.
The Museum is a 501-(c)(3) non-profit organization.
